Course/Module description:
This course will concentrate on stories told by the Jews in medieval Ashkenaz. We will examine a variety of stories from different origins: biblical, rabbinic and medieval. Using theories from the fields of literature, folklore and anthropology we will discuss the place of stories in medieval Jewish life and compare between ancient and medieval practice and beliefs as they emerge from stories alongside contemporary Christian understandings. An important focus will be on the methods that allow historians to use stories as sources for research.

Work with a wide array of primary sources, formulate original research questions and construct academic papers
