Course/Module description:
This class will examine the way Jews functioned in different spaces in medieval culture in Northern Europe. We will examine urban Jewish communities and seek to outline the contours of familial and communal life examining interactions between men and women, different members and groups within Jewish society and between Jews and Christians. The house, the street, the marketplace, the synagogue, the church and the court will all be analyzed. Theories regarding space, cultural geography, gender and comparative history will all be central to out examination.

Each topic will be accompanied by primary and secondary sources. A basic book will be Christoph Cluse, The Jews of Medieval Europe, Brepols, 2004.
