Course/Module description:
As natives of Israel, we take Hebrew for granted as our speaking, reading and writing language. But what was Hebrew’s position in North Africa during the 19th and 20th centuries? Who read, wrote or spoke Hebrew? The course will explore Hebrew’s place in the life of Jewish communities across North Africa during the 19th and 20th centuries, through a discussion into three main developmental stages: Religious Hebrew, Haskalah Hebrew and modern Hebrew. At every such stage, we shall discuss the personages, texts and institutions working to propagate the Hebrew language.

By the end of the course, students will master the acquired body of knowledge and be trained in a critical reading of studies, while reading and analyzing various primary sources, and writing an academic historical essay.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction:
Each lesson is set to involve a discussion into an article and a close reading of a primary source, with students required to prepare an article for discussion in class.

The languages spoken by North Africa’s Jews; Jewish education and Hebrew; Hebrew Haskalah movement in North Africa; Hebrew in Alliance Israélite Universelle schools; Eliezer Ben-Yehuda and North Africa’s Jewry; the discussion on modern Hebrew at the local press of North Africa; attitudes among the different communities’ elites to modern Hebrew; Hebrew dissemination societies; Hebrew teachers in North Africa; Hebrew learning books; the Hebrew network of North Africa.
