Course/Module description:
In the Middle Ages, women were marginalized and discriminated against. There is, however, a discrepancy between the negative image of women in the male imagination and in misogynist literature, and the social and economic reality in which women in fact played a significant role. During the course, we will seek to analyze this discrepancy and the inherent tension between men and women, examining such topics as Eros, romance and marriage, as well as interaction between the sexes in daily life and in light of practices of social exclusion.

Course/Module aims:
1. To learn and understand the men-women discourse in the period of the Middle Ages.
2. To introduce the basic theoretical literature of feminist criticism.
3. To learn the basic analytical tools for historical interpretation of medieval texts and genres.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Analyze historical sources, such as medieval literature, responsa and notarial documents, from the Men-Women discourse.
2. Write a short thesis on one of the seminar's topics.
3. Know the theoretical and historical discussion on Jewish women in the Middle Ages.
