Course/Module description:
Holy Safed?
Sixteenth century Safed still enjoys an almost mythic image: a holy community, the city of the kabbalists, the cradle of some of the canonic Jewish works etc. We will try to describe this community, compare it to other Ottoman-Jewish communities, follow its rise and decline, and understand as much as possible what was life in Safed like.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
an acquaintance with the research literature and primary sources;
a critical reading of the sources and modern literature.
a better understanding the dynamic realities of life in 16th c. Safed.
