Holy Safed?
Sixteenth century Safed still enjoys an almost mythic image: a holy community, the city of the kabbalists, the cradle of some of the canonic Jewish works etc. We will try to describe this community, compare it to other Ottoman-Jewish communities, follow its rise and decline, and understand as much as possible what was life in Safed like.
