Course/Module description:
The course discusses central issues in Jewish history during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Using a range of historical documents, it traces economic, social, political, religious and cultural aspects of Jewish life in Europe and elsewhere.

Course/Module aims:
While discussing central issues in modern Jewish history, the seminar also aims to acquaint students with the methodology of historical research and with the main characteristics of academic studies in the field.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Identify the primary sources and examine their historical context. They will learn to distinguish the main academic approaches and to criticize them, to track relevant research, to summarize historical tendencies and categorize them.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Each week the students will analyze a primary source or review a scholarly study. A short written assignment will be submitted at the end of the semester (see course’s site for details).
