Course/Module description:
Josephus's Antiquities is the basis of our knowledge of Jewish history in the Second Temple period. Book 18 is the opening of Josephus's account of Roman rule of Judea, the beginning of his account of the final catastrophe. The course is devoted to the issues involved in reading the book so as to learn both what really happened and how Josephus interpreted the events.
Course/Module aims:
The course aims to give students experience and proficiency in the close reading, in translation, of a work of Greek historiography written by a Jew who lived in geographical and temporal proximity to much of what he recounted.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
