Course/Module description:
הסינדרלה של העיירה, הגדי הזהוב שיביא צימוקים ושקדים, לאנטוך ומנדרכי – כל אלה ודימויים רבים אחרים התגבשו במרחב התרבותי של דוברי יידיש, לו מוקדש הקורס. הקריאה במקורות ראשונים בתרגום לעברית ובספרות המחקר תלווה היכרות עם סוגות עיקריות בפולקלור יהודי מזרח-אירופי: פתגם, חידה, משל, פורים-שפיל, אגדה היסטורית, שבח, מעשיית הקסם, נובלה וכדו'. נעסוק בשאלות כגון: מה מייחד את תרבות הצחוק שהתפתחה בקרב דוברי יידיש? כיצד משתלבת היצירה העממית במרקם חיי העיירה ובנוף הרגיונלי? מי, מתי ומדוע תיעד וחקר יצירה זו? דיון בשאלות אלה יסייע בידינו ללמוד מקרוב נדבך חשוב בתרבות יהודית ולהכיר ספרות המחקר בתחום.


The Cinderella of the shtetl, the little golden goat bringing raisins and almonds, Lantukh and Mondrekhay – all these and many other images have crystallized within the Yiddish speaking cultural realm. Along with reading primary sources in Hebrew translation and scholarly literature, we will meet the major types of Eastern European Jewish folklore: ballad, proverb, riddle, parable, Purim-shpil, legend, fairy-tale, etc. We will address questions such as: What makes the Yiddish laughter culture unique? How does Yiddish folklore fit into the fabric of shtetl life and into the regional cultural landscape? When and why was this creative corpus documented and studied? Investigating these questions will help us hone in on an important layer of Jewish culture and acquaint ourselves with research literature in the field.
