Course/Module description:
Students are introduce to the skill needed to read academic texts. Oral listening and basic writing skills are developed.

Course/Module aims:
The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the vocabulary, structure and content of basic academic texts and to the analytical skills needed to understand them.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• develop and understanding of basic academic texts
• recognizing the structure of paragraphs and texts
• skim and scan
• identify connectors and their functions
• understand words from context
• understand clear standard speech on familiar subjects and short talks
• to fulfill simple writing tasks
• to participate in conversations/discussions

Attendance requirements(%):
100%

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal teaching, individual, pair and group work.

Course/Module Content:
Among the reading strategies taught:
• recognizing the structure of an article
• skimming and scanning
• recognizing the writer's point of view
• acquisition of academic vocabulary
• analysis of more complex sentences

Students are given the opportunity to:
• express their ideas in spoken English
• listen to short talks
• develop simple writing skills

The pass grade for the course is 70.
60% of the grade is the class grade; 40% of the grade is the final exam.
Students need a minimum 60 class grade in order to take the final exam, and a minimum of 60 on the final exam in order for the class grade to be taken into account.
