Course/Module description:
This course gives students the advanced strategies needed to become independent and critical readers of English. Oral, Listening and writing skills are also developed.
Course/Module aims:
The purpose of the course is to enable students to improve their reading and analysis of academic articles written in English. The goal is for students to become proficient, independent and critical readers of academic texts. Students are taught to integrate and present the information and ideas presented and to respond to these ideas both orally and in writing.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• read, understand and analyse academic texts
• integrate and present the information in the texts in a discussion of the subject as well as in written form
• participate in an academic discussion
• give a presentation
on an academic subject
• understand lectures such as TED talks
• write a short cohesive text

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction:
Frontal teaching, individual, pair and group work.
Course/Module Content:
Amongst the reading strategies taught:
• identifying different genres of academic writing
• recognizing the structure of an article
• knowing when to employ different reading strategies such as skimming and scanning
• recognizing the writer's point of view
• recognizing the use of hedging
• becoming familiar with the language and vocabulary common to various fields of study
• to converse and express their opinions in English
