Course/Module description:
The course utilizes scientific, academic texts from many disciplines and encourages independent reading skills which can be applied to all scientific disciplines. A variety of skills are taught which encompass writing, oral presentation, and summarizing ability.
Course/Module aims:
The purpose of the course is to enable the students to improve their reading and analysis of scientific, academic articles written in English. The goal is for students to become proficient in independent reading of scientific texts and to enable students to integrate and present the information both orally and in written form.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• develop improved reading comprehension of academic scientific texts
• analyze, integrate and present information both orally and in written form
• participate in an academic discussion conducted in English
• make a presentation in English on an academic topic

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction:
Frontal teaching, individual, pair and group work. Texts from different disciplines and genres are read and a variety of different reading strategies are practiced.
Students are required to complete an independent project or presentation.
Course/Module Content:
Amongst the strategies taught:
• identifying different genres of academic writing
• recognizing the structure of an article
• knowing when to employ different reading strategies such as skimming and scanning
• analyzing complex sentences
• recognizing the writer's point of view
• recognizing the use of hedging
• becoming familiar with the language and vocabulary common to various fields of study
• compare and contrast ideas and identify fact from opinion.
