Course/Module description:
Developing practical proficiency in transcribing oral texts using the International Phonetic Association (IPA) transcription methodology. The students will learn to distinguish pronunciation variations in Hebrew.

Course/Module aims:
To learn how to transcribe spoken language varieties and oral traditions using the IPA (International Phonetic Association) transcription method. To learn to distinguish between pronunciation variants. To develop one’s hearing for the purpose of accurate phonetic transcription.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
At the end of the course the student will be able to transcribe oral texts using the IPA transcription method.

Attendance requirements(%):
90%

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: The course takes place in the phonetics laboratory. Each student has a computerized phonetic station with earphones where he/she practices the pronunciation of the different consonants and vowels, how to distinguish between them, and how to transcribe them.

Course/Module Content:
Definition of consonants; points of articulation and articulators; manners of articulation; voicing; aspiration; consonant clusters; affricates; secondary articulation; pronunciation of the vowels; duration of vowels and of consonants; the Tiberian vowel system; the IPA transcription system.

Asher Laufer, Chapters in Phonetics and Phonetic Transcription, Jerusalem 2008 (in Hebrew).
