תאור כללי של הקורס:
במהלך הקורס נעסוק ברקע ההיסטורי והתיאורטי לעבודתו הבלשנית של פרדינן דה סוסיר, וננסה לשחזר את התיאוריה שהוא הציע ואת החידוש שבה.

מטרות הקורס:
1) הכרת נקודות ציון חשובות בתולדות הדיסציפלינה הבלשנית - תוך התמקדות בשאלת המדעיות של התחום.
2) שחזור של התיאוריה הבלשנית של דה סוסיר לאור תקופתו.
3) הבנה של היחסים השונים בין החלקים השונים של התיאוריה של דה סוסיר, וההשלכות שלהן על סדר היום של המחקר הבלשני.

תוצרי למידה :
בסיומו של קורס זה, סטודנטים יהיו מסוגלים:
1) ליישם תיאוריות שונות מן התחום של הפילוסופיה של המדעים.
2) להציג את תחנות דרך בתולדות שתי המאות הראשונות של תחום הבלשנות.
3) ליישם מה שלומדים על דה-סוסיר בתיאוריות בלשניות אחרות.
4) לבחון את ההתפתחות ההיסטורית של הבלשנות לאור העיסוק במדעיות של התחום.

שיטת ההוראה בקורס: הרצאות פרונטליות, ומצגות של סטודנטים

רשימת נושאים / תכנית הלימודים בקורס:
פרדינן דה סוסיר (ד"ס) אשר נודע בחייו בעיקר בזכות עבודתו בבלשנות ההיסטורית המשווה, הרצה בין השנים 1907 ל 1911 שלושה קורסים על הבלשנות הכללית. לאחר מותו הפתאומי בשנת 1913 השתמשו עמיתיו באוניברסיטת ג'נבה במחברות של משתתפי השיעור (המועטים) וערכו את הספר המפורסם "קורס בבלשנות כללית" אשר נחשב לאבן היסוד בבלשנות הסטרוקטוראלית.
משנות החמישים של המאה הקודמת, משהושווה הספר למחברות המקוריות החלו להישמע הטענות כי עורכי הספר לא שיקפו נכונה את משנתו של ד"ס ויצרו משנה עם תכנים זרים למקור. טענות אלו התחזקו משנתגלו כתבי יד של ד"ס בשנת 1996 וביניהם הרשימות שלו לקורסים ואף כתב-יד של חיבור תיאורטי שכתב.
לסמינר תהיינה מספר מטרות: ראשית לקחת חלק במחקר ה"פילולוגי" המנסה לשחזר מה סבר ד"ס עצמו לאור כל הממצאים שבידינו המקרבים אותנו למקור מבחינה ביוגראפית. לשם כך ננסה לאסוף את הנקודות מן הממצאים השונים ולצרפן לכדי תמונה כוללת. לשם כך נעסוק בשאלות הנוגעות לרקע של ד"ס את מי הוא הכיר ועם מי הוא באמת התווכח? מה הייתה ההכשרה שלו? מה הטריד אותו בבלשנות שלפניו? ושאלות נוספות כיוצא באלו. לצד זה נבחן נושאים החוזרים שוב ושוב בהקשר של ד"ס, לדוגמה הדיכוטומיה שבין מחקר דיאכרוני וסינכרוני, ונחשוף כיצד הייתה לד"ס גישה שונה מזו המיוחסת לו.
מעבר לזה, הרשימות של ד"ס חושפות התחבטויות מתודולוגיות העומדות בבסיס של חקר הבלשנות. מֵהן התחבטויות הנוגעות לטבעו של אובייקט המחקר, ומהן התלבטויות במקומו הייחודי של הבלשן כמדען וכאובייקט המחקר בו זמנית. כפי שנראה ד"ס היה טרוד בשאלות אפיסטמולוגיות מן הסוג הזה לרוב. שאלות אלו חשובות הואיל והוא הרבה להדגיש כי מדובר ביצירת דיסציפלינה מדעית ותבע את עצמאותה. במידה רבה נוכל בעזרת העיסוק הזה לעקוב אחר מחשבותיו של מי שיצר תחום במדע, ולהעריך את שיפוטיו מחד, ולעמוד על ההשלכות של זה לבלשנות ככלל מאידך. כך גם נעסוק בשאלה מהם קני המידה בעיניו הקובעים שבלשנות היא אכן מדע. בהקשרים הללו ד"ס ישמש אמצעי לדון בשאלות הנוגעות לפילוסופיה של המדעים בהקשר הבלשני, שאלות שנזנחות לעתים קרובות.
לסיום נעסוק בהשלכות של התיאוריה של ד"ס לחקר הבלשנות בפועל. בהקשר הזה נדון באחת השאלות הקלאסיות בהקשר של ד"ס והיא: "מדוע הוא מעולם לא הציג בלשנות סינכרונית?" לו אכן זו הייתה מטרתו, מפתיע לגלות שהוא מעולם לא התיימר להציג מחקר כזה. מעבר לניסיון לענות על השאלה הזאת באופן ספציפי, הניסיון לגלות מה הפרוגרמה המדעית שלו יחשוף גם את הבעיות שבמשנה הססוריאנית, וכיצד למעשה ד"ס הוביל את עצמו לדרך חסומה. מחד נחשף לבעיות שרק בלשנים שאחריו (הן בהקשר הסטרוקטוראלי הן בהקשר הגנרטיבי) הציעו פתרונות אפשריים כמו השאלה כיצד לומדים תחביר. אך מאידך נציע את העמדה כי בכוח החומר שבידינו להציג תפיסות אלטרנטיביות לעמדות הרווחות בבלשנות בת ימינו, כגון המעמד הקוגניטיבי של הלקסיקון.
