Course/Module description:
The course discusses central issues within the study of contemporary Chinese culture and society, with a focus on current tensions between cultural unity and diversity, and on the interaction between indigenous traditions, modernization, and globalization in 21st century China. Special attention will be given to the ongoing attempts of the Chinese state to shape different aspects of cultural life, and how various social groups in China react to these attempts and construct their own meanings of "Chinese culture" today. Class discussions will draw on readings in cultural studies, gender studies, and sociology and anthropology of China, and will include screening of select documentary clips.
Course/Module aims:
• To outline main trends in the developemnt of contemporary Chinese culture and society while situating these trends within a comparative and global context
• To discuss how macro-processes of change and continuity are expressed - and shaped - by the everyday experiences of individuals in China
• To help students hone their critical thinking and analytical skills, along with an ability to formulate a well-reasoned argument related to the class topics
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Delineate recent developments in Chinese culture and society while situating these developments within a comparative and global context
• Provide examples of how macro-processes of continuity and change are expressed - and shaped - by the everyday experiences of individuals in China in different social areas
• Demonstrate critical thinking and analytical ability, and present a well-reasoned argument in a final paper that combines the theoretical concepts and thematic issues discussed in class

A short lecture followed by class discussion based on readings and viewing of documentary clips.
