Course/Module description:
This course is intended for students whose native language is not Hebrew, and for those who studied in educational institutions where Hebrew is not the primary language of instruction. The course will focus on developing linguistic literacy skills in Hebrew, including improving reading, writing, and critical analysis of academic texts. The learning materials have been selected from a variety of genres, fundamental ideas, and subjects included in the curricula of the Faculty of Humanities. The course will address questions raised in the various disciplines of the humanities and will encourage critical and creative thinking. Additionally, the course is designed to provide tools and strategies for learning and development for students at the beginning of their academic journey, as well as an introduction to the university system in its academic and practical context. The course is a year-long and is a mandatory prerequisite for advancing to the second year of studies.

- Recognize the relevant responsible bodies for their needs at the university, and they will know how to approach them.
- Read and understand an academic text easily and efficiently, distinguish between its parts and recognize the main arguments.
- Critically analyze ideas and express their personal opinion in Hebrew with proper justifications, orally and in writing.
- Write a research paper independently in Hebrew, according to the academic requirements.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction:
The teaching method will be varied and will include written tasks and frontal assignments. Participation of the students in classes will be a central part.

First Semester
Class 1 - Familiarity with the course and the students
Class 2 – How to read an article; creating a course schedule
Class 3 – Active learning; a basis for academic writing
Class 4 - Writing a paragraph; time management
Class 5 – Critical review of texts
Class 6 – Academic writing (sentence, conjunctions, paragraph); approaching different responsible bodies in the university ; familiarity with the writing center of Faculty
Class 7 - Sources and citation, academic ethics and integrity
Class 8 - Writing a summary of an article; familiarity with assistance programs in the faculty
Class 9 – What is a research paper? ; Identification of main arguments
Class 10 – Synthesis Class 11 – Preparation for the midterm assignment; studying for midterm tests
Class 12 – Workshop: midterm assignment; the relation between our course and other courses
Class 13 – What is an oral presentation?; A moment of self-reflection - is this the department for me?; reviewing the semester
Second Semester
Class 1 – Presenting the structure of the semester; research papers and practicing oral presentations; expectations for this semester
Class 2 – Practicing oral presentations; primary and secondary sources
Class 3 – Personal consultations about the research papers; critical review of non-textual resources; research question
Class 4 – Analysis of main arguments; citing rules
Class 5 – What is a logical argument?; introduction and summary
