Course/Module description:
The first Codices of the Jewish law were formulated during the Geonic period, and the most famous among them was Rav' Hayya's Laws of Sales. In this course, we will study its Talmudic textual evidence, tradition of Talmudic commentary and rulings, and its influence on the next generations. We will also deal with the connections with the Islamic law and theology (both Muatazilate and Shiite)

To explore this monograph in its historical and cultural background
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. To acquire skills needed to read Geonic Judicial treatises.
2. To compare the Geonic and Amoraic traditions.
3. To identify the connections between Jewish and Islamic legal treatises.
4. To place the Geonic Judicial literature in the wider context of Jewish tradition
