Course/Module description:
The course will examine the various aspects of mishnah composition and the development of halakha through a close reading of tractate Shabbat. The students will acquire the basic tools of textual analysis, and will identify the sources of the mishnah and its specific approaches, in comparison to alternative constructions of Shabbat laws.
Course/Module aims:
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Assess textual variants and their exegetical significance, and use lexical tools for literary interpretation.
2. Identify various textual phenomena including: literary sources, redaction, reconstruct the development of traditions.
3. Compare the mishna to other tannaitic parallels
4. Identify the difference between early and late halakhah and offer explanations to these developments.
5. Describe the different approaches of rabbinic and sectarian halahkah.
