Course/Module description:
In This course, we will practice reading in central rabbinic texts from late medieval Ashkenaz. It will discuss the central rabbinic figures of the 15th century, the main events in the history of Ashkenazi communities, and their reflections in the responsa literature. Using these texts, we will discuss the systematization of the Ashkenazi rabbinate, the Ashkenazi ordination (Semikha) and Talmud studies in the Shkenazi Yeshivot, Discipline and Punish in Ashkenaz, Pogroms and persecutions and their reflections in responsa literature, and the history of the book in Ashkenaz in manuscripts and early printings.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Reading Halakhic literature of the 15th century Ashkenaz, identifying and deciphering Ashkenazic script and Ashkenazic manuscripts

Course/Module Content:
I this course we will read responsa such as "Terumat Hadeshen", "responsa rabbi Yaakov Weil", and "responsa rabbi Moses Mintz", Minhagim literature by Maharil and rabbi Isaac Tyrnau, professional halakhic literature, and the literature of Tosaphot Gurnish.
Special attention will be given to Ashkenazic manuscripts.
