Course/Module description:
We will learn about the Aramaic dialect of the Babylonian Talmud. We will deal with some main topics in its grammar, read texts from the Talmud and discuss various linguistic phenomena.
Course/Module aims:
Knowledge of main topics in the grammar of Babylonian Aramaic, and familiarity with the important manuscripts of the Babylonian Talmud.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To get to know the unique characteristics of the Babylonian Aramaic dialect, to recognize linguistic phenomena in the manuscripts of the Babylonian Talmud, to become familiar with the latest research on the dialect.

- The history of Jewish Aramaic
- The origins of Babylonian Aramaic
- Phenomena in phonology, morphology, syntax and vocabulary.
