Course/Module description:
In this course we will discuss the clinical and pre-clinical aspects of psychiatric disorders, focused on biological, genetic, physiological, and neurofunctional properties of these disorders and their current and future treatments.
Course/Module aims:
• To identify the symptoms of selected psychiatric disorders.
• To acquire basic knowledge about the biological, physiological and neurofunctional aspects of various psychiatric disorders, and their treatments.
• To search for academic information in the field, reviewing publications, and presenting the subject in class.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Identify symptoms of various psychiatric disorders.
• Explain physiological, biological and neurofunctional mechanisms associated with various psychiatric disorders.
• Describe the physiological mechanisms underlying current available treatments for various psychiatric disorders.
• Plan a basic follow-up research in the field of biological psychiatry.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction:
In the first part of the course frontal lectures will be given by the lecturer, while in the second part students will study a chosen topic in the field and present it in class.

• History of psychiatry and biological psychiatry.
• Schizophrenia and psychotic disorders.
• Depression and bipolar disorders (mood disorders).
• Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
• Autism.
• Anxiety and PTSD.
