Course/Module description:
This course will focus on representations of motherhood and maternity in Western visual culture from the vantage point of historical, cultural and psychological theories. The course contains two parts. The first section inspects the mother Goddess, concentrating on the maternal architype from Pre-history to the Renaissance and its relevance to present-day. The second part investigates mundane mothers in modern culture, from the end of the eighteen century onwards, while discussing relevant psychological, medical and theoretical concepts.

Course/Module aims:
The course is designed to provide stimulating discussions regarding maternity in art, while developing skills of critical observation of images and texts. A central aim is to stimulate small-group learning, exchange of ideas, and testing of interdisciplinary methods of work.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Students who follow the course will gain knowledge and understanding of some significant approaches to maternity and motherhood and enhanced awareness of the relevance of theory for historical analysis.
