Course/Module description:
The geographical proximity between the Maghreb countries (Morocco, Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia) and the Iberian Peninsula has created a special connection between these two regions over the centuries. These were reciprocal relations, with the dominant direction of influence changing from time to time according to historical circumstances and frequent changes in rule. With the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, the Maghreb became one of the destinations for the expelled Jews. They continued to preserve their traditions alongside other local traditions.

This course focuses on art objects that were part of Jewish worship or everyday culture in the Maghreb communities. We will analyze these objects according to contemporary approaches that have developed in recent years with the emergence of the "material turn" in the humanities. Through these approaches, we will seek to become acquainted with the art and visual culture of the Maghreb communities within broader cultural contexts, and to understand their connections to Spanish traditions that formed before the expulsion, their evolution, and their independent development. Throughout the course, we will alternately move between the Maghreb and Iberian regions, back and forth along the timeline, from the last generations before the expulsion to modern times, while deeply examining the dynamics with the non-Jewish environment—Muslim and Christian.

The lessons will be accompanied by the vast database of the Bezalel Narkiss Index of Jewish Art, which we will learn to use as an essential tool for study and research. The course is offered in collaboration with the Center for Jewish Art.

Course/Module aims:
1. In recent decades, the study of material culture in the humanities has moved to the forefront, yet the material culture of Eastern communities in general, and North Africa in particular, has not yet received sufficient attention. One of the goals of the course is to bring the study of North African Jewish artifacts to the forefront of research and to expose students to the immense research potential they hold.
2. To equip students with tools for the study and research of artifacts.
3. To reveal the interdisciplinary and interreligious nature of the art and material culture of these artifacts.
4. To encourage research in these fields.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. To integrate study and research methods from various fields in the study of artifacts, including art history, material culture, history, and more.
2. To gain tools for analyzing artifacts using new methods practiced in the humanities.
