תאור כללי של הקורס:
בקורס יבחנו פסיפסי הרצפה של התרבות היוונית, הרומית והביזנטית למן התקופה הקלאסית ועד שלהי העת העתיקה. ננתח באופן ביקורתי את הגישות השונות לחקר הפסיפס, נתייחס להקשרים האדריכליים המגוונים של הפסיפסים ונעקוב אחר תהליכים של המשכיות ושינוי. מגוון הנושאים המתואר בפסיפסים הוא רחב וכולל דמויות וסיפורים מן המיתולוגיה, נופים, טבע דומם, תיאורים מחיי יומיום וסיפורים מקראיים. לצד ניתוח האיקונוגרפיה, טכניקות הפסיפס, הקומפוזיציה והסגנון נעמוד על ההקשר התרבותי, הדתי והחברתי של היצירות מתוך רצון להבין את תפקידם בחברה, הרעיונות והערכים שהם משקפים וכן את אופן התקבלותם על ידי הקהל שצפה בהם. נעקוב אחר תהליכים של הלניזציה ורומניזציה ונזרה אור על המפגש בין כובשים לנכבשים. באמצעות רצפות הפסיפס בבתי הכנסת ובכנסיות נבחן את הדיאלוג רב הממדים בין יהודים ונוצרים בשלהי העת העתיקה. הדיון בפסיפסים מגלה כי האמנות לא רק משקפת תמורות היסטוריות וחברתיות, אלא הייתה בעצמה סוכנת של שינוי.

מטרות הקורס:
א. הכרות עם פסיפסי הרצפה אשר נוצרו בתרבויות הקלאסיות ובביזנטיון מתוך כוונה להגיע להבנה מעמיקה יותר של התרבות במסגרתה הן נוצרו
ב. בחינת הפסיפסים בגישה קונטקסטואלית והקניית כלים לניתוח יצירות אמנות, תוך התייחסות לגישות פרשניות שונות.
ג. התייחסות למרחבים הפרטי והציבורי והתייחסות לקהלים שונים של צופים.
ד. הכרות עם מקורות מידע בני הזמן הרלוונטיים לדיון בפסיפסים.
ה. הכרות עם תולדות מחקר האמנות בתקופות הרלוונטיות.
