Course/Module description:
The course is for students who do social involvement (2 credits) as part of their undergraduate studies. Students will be presented with an initial conceptual framework regarding citizenship, civic engagement in a democratic society, civil society, volunteering and social engagement.

Course/Module aims:
1.Provide students with a conceptual framework on civic engagement activities and civil society in a democratic society.
2. Provide students with knowledge to examine and analyze their social involvement activities from different angles.
3. Provide a framework for students who are doing social involvement during their BA studies for reflection, consultation, and peer dialogue.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Define key terms in the areas of citizenship, democracy, civil society, and civic engagement.
• Critically evaluate the major theories in the field.
• Apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in the course for the purpose of a reflective and critical analysis of their social involvement and the organizations in which it is carried out.

1. Civic engagement in a democratic society.
2. What is civil society? Approaches to explain the activities of civil society and its components.
3. Civil Society and Democracy.
4. Civil society and civic engagement in Israel: development, structure, characteristics, activities, roles and trends in light of the Covid-19 crisis.
5. Civil society in Israel – social activism, advocacy and social change.
6. Civil society in Israel and the privatization of the welfare state.
7. Volunteering.
8. Civic engagement by young people.
