Course/Module description:
The socio-critical approach to disability views it as a social phenomenon shaped by environmental, economic, cultural, and political factors. This course, based on guest lectures, uses this approach to explore the behavior and experiences of individuals with disabilities in both personal and interpersonal contexts. We will examine how these personal spheres—including physical and emotional experiences, as well as intimate relationships with oneself and others—are shaped by social dynamics and structures. Grounded in the belief that the personal is political, the course will address concepts such as identity, empathy, sexuality, therapeutic relationships, pain, and the body.
The course will feature three lectures by the instructor, with the remaining sessions led by guest lecturers, including researchers, professionals, and social activists. These speakers will offer diverse perspectives, connecting theory, research, and real-world practice. In line with the socio-critical approach, which emphasizes the importance of people with disabilities in shaping theory and advancing our understanding of disability, many guest lecturers will be individuals with disabilities.
Please note: Guest lecturers will participate via Zoom, followed by in-class discussions. Students must attend these discussions in person.
