Course/Module description:
In recent years, there is a massive growth in the activities of civil society in Israel and elsewhere, and it becomes a significant player in policy making processes, in the delivery of services to diverse populations, and as a sphere for a challenging the state and creating alternative discourses to those of the state and the market. Civil society (and the third sector), is a gendered sphere, since women in this sphere have central and prominent participation, higher than in other societal sectors (state and market). Most of the volunteers, employees and clients of civil society organizations are women. Civil Society create an alternative forms of participation, initiative, activity, employment and services for women that do not exist in the state and market sectors.
The seminar will study the roles, activity patterns, effects and dilemmas confronting women in civil society initiated, activities, managers, workers and customers. The research seminar will focus on various aspects and issues related to gender divisions in civil society and their impact upon women.

Course/Module aims:
1.To acquaintance the students with theoretical and empirical knowledge on gender issues in civil society, and to develop critical thinking on the existing literature
2.To acquaintance the students with theoretical and methodological tools required for the conduction of a qualitative research on gender in civil society.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1.To critically review and summarize the main concepts and issues in gender and civil society research.
2.To define the research agenda and questions.
3.To locate and critically review the relevant literature
4.To select an appropriate research method and to design a research plan.
5.To compose a research proposal.
6.To conduct a qualitative research.



Attendance requirements(%):
Full and active attendance during all the classes and meetings with the teacher.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: The course is set to combine lectures, discussions (requiring preparation and active participation) and independent students work.

4.Management and gender in civil society
5.Gender and civil society in Israel
6.Tools for planning and conducting a research project:
- Choosing research question and drawing research agenda
- Locating relevant scholarship and charting initial parameters for literature review
- Developing research methodology that is adequate for the research agenda
-Research ethics
- Composing research proposal
- Conducting a research
