Course/Module description:
The course will deal with a variety of topics related to the rehabilitation of prisoners in Israel and will include an introduction to relevant sociological concepts (imprisonment, prison terms, total institutions, etc.). An overview of the prison system in Israel and the development of correctional services in prisons over the years, including the early release model. We will get to know the accepted ways of rehabilitation, along with the description of the benefits and limitations of rehabilitation in prisons.
During the course we will get to know in depth the ways of treating sex offenders, women in prison and addicts, and we will also learn and practice the main tools for performing risk assessments.
The last part of the course will discuss alternatives to the prison sentence

Course/Module aims:
1. To expose the students to the treatment of the criminal prisoner population in Israel, and to evaluate the degree of success of the intervention programs in the rehabilitation of prisoners.
2. To provide students with knowledge regarding the complexities of care and rehabilitation in prisons, to offer ways of dealing with these complexities.
3. To know the characteristics of imprisonment and its effects on the prisoner and his chances of rehabilitation.
4. To provide basic tools for carrying out risk assessments for recidivism.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
At the end of this course, the students:
• Will get to know the prison system in Israel and the development of the correction system.
• Will get to know the differential treatment plans in accordance with the various characteristics of the prisoners.
• Will understand the complexity of moral dilemmas dealing with punishment and rehabilitation.
• Will learn concepts related to risk assessments, clinical and actuarial.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: The course includes a combination of frontal plenary sessions, individual and group exercises, and discussions.

Course/Module Content:
Background of the prison system, relevant concepts (imprisonment, prison pains, total institutions, prisoner subculture, etc.).
Review of the prison system in Israel and characteristics of prisoners in Israel, privatization of prisons
The correction system in prisons, incentives and punishment, early release.
Sex offenders in prisons - denial, treatment and supervision models.
Women in prisons - unique characteristics and changes in recent years
Treatment of drug and alcohol addicts in prisons
Performing risk assessments (risk/chance) for recidivism, clinical tools versus actuarial tools.
Restorative alternatives to imprisonment
