Course/Module description:
This course will focus on issues related to social welfare of the Haredi population. During the course we will discuss the unique characteristics of the Haredi population, its unique needs, and its informal services. Emphasize will put on culturally sensitive interventions and services, while discussing challenges, dilemmas and conflicts in the delivery of services to the Haredi population.

Course/Module aims:
The purpose of the course is to expose students to the unique needs of the Haredi population and discuss possible response channels; to identify gaps between the Haredi populations’ needs and existing services; to discuss culturally sensitive - interventions; and to raise dilemmas and conflicts that a professional may encounter during his/her professional work with ultra-Orthodox clients.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

Better understand the characteristics of Haredi society, its unique needs in the area of social welfare, and the importance of culturally -sensitive interventions.
2. Be aware of intra-communal services among the Haredi community, and of the possibility of using them during professional work.
3. Be better aware of dilemmas and conflicts that might arise during professional work with the Haredi population, as a result of differences of believes, values and perceptions.
4. Better understand the implications of these dilemmas and conflicts, and have better skills and tools to address them
5. Become better at overcoming challenges in delivering services to Haredi clients, as well as to clients from cultural diversity background.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal lectures and discussion with students.
The course will combine guest lectures.

Course/Module Content:
Week 1-2: Introduction: course goals and background of Haredi society in Israel, its characteristics and unique needs.
Week 3-4: Interrelationships between professionals and key people in Haredi society.
Week 5-6: Attitudes and perceptions toward people with disabilities in Haredi society.
Week 7-8: Needs of individual versus needs of community/collective.
Week 9-10: Culturally Sensitive Interventions and provision of value-sensitive services for Haredi population.
Week 11-12: Intra-community informal services.
Week 13: Summary of the course and discussion of the final task.
