Course/Module description:
The course will present the theoretical foundations of qualitative research and the major steps in conducting it. The course will mostly be based on learning by experience, by which theoretical terms will be conceptualized through research experiences of the students in the field of social work with children and families. We will begin by presenting the theoretical and philosophical grounds of qualitative research, as well as its main schools and traditions. We will discuss choosing a research subject, formulating research questions and designing a research plan. We will then introduce and experience main strategies of data collection and analysis, and presentation of the findings. Finally, we will discuss ethical issues in qualitative research, trustworthiness and researcher's reflexivity.
Course/Module aims:
This introductory course will allow for basic introduction with the qualitative research paradigm and its main traditions. Students will gain tools which will enable them to read and analyze research papers in social work based on the qualitative paradigm. Students will learn the basics of qualitative research through guided hands-on research experience.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Students will understand and apply the fundamentals of qualitative research, and will be able to formulate qualitative research topic and research questions
Students will know how to conduct a semi-structured, in-depth interview
Students will be able to perform thematic analysis and present preliminary findings from analysis of the interviews
Students will know to critically read qualitative research papers in social work
