Course/Module description:
This course is designed to provide students with a general overview on the different areas of psychology, including cognitive, biological, behavioral, humanistic, psychodynamic and sociocultural perspectives. The course is designed to provide social work students with a broad understanding of core psychological concepts, relevant to social work, including: thought and cognition, memory, consciousness, learning, the physiological basis of psychology,stress, emotions and more. The course will introduce major concepts, theories, and research methods, and will review major empirical findings in psychology. The basic concepts will be presented with a particular focus on critical thinking regarding research and theory, as well as the reciprocal influences between individuals and their environment in psychological processes. In addition, the course will provide students with the capacity to apply theoretical models of behavior and thought to real life settings in the clinical practice of social workers.
Course/Module aims:
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Students will become knowledgeable about the major theories that inform psychology
2. Students will understand how the reciprocal influences between the individual and the environment relate to the individual's psychological state
3. Students will understanding how theories and research in psychology were developed from the history of the field and its major advances, to the latest research
4. Students will acquire knowledge about various research methods in psychology
5. Students will understand core concepts in the different areas of psychology
6. Students will apply theoretical models and concepts in psychology to real life settings in the clinical practice
7. Students will critically examine (understanding advantages and disadvantages) theories and empirical findings
