Course/Module description:
This is a basic course during which we will learn the principles, theories and practices of social work. The course combines a theoretical teaching basis with group discussions and experiences in order to facilitate a thorough understanding and internalization of theoretical material and experiences in the field. The course is conducted in small groups, and allows for reflection, as well as ethical, emotional and cognitive coping with the complexity of the acquired content in an integrated manner.
The course is comprised of two parts: group learning and practical experience. These two parts form a complex and integrated learning experience. The group learning will provide a theoretical foundation and will include basic concepts, models, approaches and a conceptual framework of the social work profession. The practical experience will provide the opportunity to practice in the field while applying the learning materials to the service recipients in a wide variety of welfare services.

Course/Module aims:
1. To provide students with knowledge about the nature of social work, its origins, the development of ideas, the basis of knowledge on which it relies, and the foundations and values that shape the field and its services.
2. To provide students’ with their first theoretical and practical experiences in analyzing and understanding social work as a theory and as a practice.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Students will understand basic concepts in social work and would be able to connect them to situations in the field.
- Students will be familiar with the systems of intervention in the social work field and will understand the connection between them.
- Students would be able to analyze situations, including their experiences in the field, according to theories and approaches in social work.
- Students would be able to identify the historical roots of the profession.
- Students will discuss their professional identity as future social workers.
- Students will understand the basic values of the profession.
- Students will experience reflective thinking (introspection)
- Students will develop critical thinking about issues that social workers face.
- Students will experience active group learning.
