Course/Module description:
This is a very basic English course aimed at giving a broad and rich exposure to English in various contexts in order to build the foundations of English in the beginner adult learner. Focus on reading skills and building basic vocabulary. We have catered the course to aid those with no previous knowledge in English to build foundations of reading, vocabulary and more.

Course/Module aims:
The aim of this course is to give students tools to build and expand their knowledge of English in a practical way through teaching relevant topics, focusing on skill based learning (4 main skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening).

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need. Can read and understand simple texts. Can identify an abstract and identify main parts of an academic article.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal teaching, individual work, group work, work in pairs

Course/Module Content:
This course covers the four main components of language learning: reading, speaking, listening and writing.
The components will be taught while covering various topics within three main pillars of language use: personal, academic, and professional.
For example:
English for Personal Use: students will learn English for everyday life: introducing themselves, small talk, basic conversations in real situations (restaurants, hotels, asking for help, etc.), expressing opinions, and more.
English for Academic Purposes: students will be exposed to academic articles in English, will learn basic vocabulary for academic purposes, will learn to identify abstracts and basic structure of academic research, and more.
English for Professional Purposes: students will learn vocabulary for professional purposes, cultural norms in a professional setting, writing basic emails, and more.

Additional information:
Assessment in the course will be based on the four main skills:
Reading tasks (15%)
Writing – 3 graded writing tasks, 5% each (15%)
Speaking- two presentations, one mini (5%) and a final presentation (10%) (15%)
Listening – 3 graded listening tasks, 5% each (15%)
ALL tasks are compulsory.
Homework (5%)
Participation (5%)
Final Exam: 30% of the final grade. Passing mark: 60.
Passing grade for the course: 70.
Students must pass the final exam with at least a 60 and also pass the course with at least a 70 passing grade.
