Course/Module description:
The seminar will deal with various subjects concerning the relationship between religion and State, in Israel and in different countries all over the world. The seminar will focused in the Israeli model, and will compare it with other models as separation between State and religion, accommodation, “State (official) Religion”, etc.

Course/Module aims:
To learn about the relationship between State and Religion and the role of law

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Ability to examine different questions relating State and Religion issues and writing a comprehensive paper about one of them

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal

Course/Module Content:
What is “Religion”; historical, social and philosophical aspects of Religion and State relationship; freedom of religion and freedom from religion; Religious institutions: Religious courts, Chief Rabbinate; “Shabbat Laws”; Marriage and divorce; religious sects; non-jewish religious sects in Israel; religious councils; Kashrut laws; Holy places; convertion; burial societies and religious cemetries; abortion.
