Course/Module description:
The course will be analyzing the responsa literature from various aspects: history, theory of adjudication, reasoning and rhetoric.
Along with the historical description of the development of responsa literature throughout history, the course will discuss the place of the respondents and their answers in terms of the theory of adjudication, the respondents’ place in historical turning points, analyze arguments and answers using argumentation theories, logic and rhetoric.

Course/Module aims:
1. Exploring the character and role of the responsa literature in different periods
2. Exploring the image and role of respondents in light of American legal realism
3. Understanding the unique place of respondents in historical turning situations
4. Distinguish between valid and non-valid arguments
5. Distinction between the different techniques in rhetoric

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Identify the characteristics of an answer and to classify it to a certain historical period.
2. Formulate the argument presented in Resp
3. Criticize the argument presented in Resp

Responsa literature during the periods of the Geonim, Rishonim and Acharonim
Using analysis from jurisprudence, logic, rhetoric and discourse analysis to analyze questions and answers
