Course/Module description:
This course will revolve around the relationship between Haredi society and general Israeli society, the different issues involved, and how these issues find expression in Israeli law and court decisions. These issues include: Haredi education; army service; workforce participation; gender separation; the character of the public space; discrimination; and others.
Before reaching the discussion of specific issues, the course will present an introduction to the Haredi community, discussing its ideological and social foundations, as well as current trends. This introduction will enable a discussion of the particular issues both from the perspective of general Israeli society, and from that of the Haredi community.
Course/Module aims:
-- To present students with a deeper understanding of the nature of the Haredi community and its relationship with broader Israel society.
-- To allow students to consider the relationship between the communities through the lens of the law, including several key decisions relating to some of the most delicate issues.
-- To encourage students to see the questions, social and legal, which emerge from the interaction between societies, from different perspectives, and to discuss them out of an awareness of their complexity.
-- To clarify how the ongoing issues between the Haredi community and broader Israel are of great significance, both for the Haredi community and for Israel in general, and of the need for their delicate treatment.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Understanding the foundations of the Haredi community in Israel, and its interaction and tension with broader Israel.
To understand the legal reasoning employed in the different issues that have arisen.
To discuss these legal and social issues, in all of their complexities.
To recognize the different sides of the argument and appreciate the delicate and highly important nature of debates.
