Course/Module description:
The goal of the course is to develop skills and tools for academic writing in criminology. During this course the students will get to know a variety of publications in criminology; learn how to locate relevant publications and use them; and to examine academic texts while focusing on its theoretical context, the writers declared and hidden assumptions, the research questions and a critical analysis of the answers. The theoretical and structural aspects of academic writing will be discussed and practiced.

Course/Module aims:
To develop skills in critical reading of academic texts, locating and using professional publications and writing academic texts in criminology.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To identify an academic text and to distinguish it from popular or professional writing.
To correctly classify and use terms related to academic writing, such as empirical, peer reviewed, theoretical or research.
To locate relevant publications and use them.
To read academic texts with a critical view, and to locate them in the wide criminology literature context.
To identify research questions and assumptions.
To construct an argument and a research question suitable for academic text.
To use publications in an ethical manner.
