Course/Module description:
The terms forensic science, criminalistics and expert opinion will be explained; criminal investigations which have been resolved by scientific methods will be presented and discussed; and the concept of proactive forensic science will be demonstrated and discussed.
Course/Module aims:
The students will acquire basic understanding of forensic sacience; recognize the scope and limitations of the application of scientific techniques for resolving crimes; and understand the requirements from the expert witness.

Understand how forensic scientists are using tools such as fingerprints or DNA for identification of single persons;and will have basic understanding of analysis of illicit drugs and poisons; in scientific investigation of bomb and arson cases; in fornsic ballistics and technical examination of documents and of toolmarks.

Frontal lecture with frontal lecture with Power Point presentation.
Homework twice or three times during the course.
Course/Module Content:
Introduction and basic terms; historical survey;crime scene and its importance to the investigation;identification of individual persons; fingerprints (detection and identification)and their evidential value in court; forensic biology before and after the development of forensic DNA; questioned documents (handwriting and technical examinations);illicit drugs, designer drugs; the illicit drugs act; selected court verdicts; unsolved problems in forensic science.
