תאור כללי של הקורס:
קורס זה בוחן באופן ביקורתי את הספרות הקרימינולוגית הענפה שהתפתחה ביחס לקבלת החלטות של מבצעי עבירות. הקורס מתייחס לשלושה שלבים מובחנים "בקריירה של פושעים". ראשית, בהחלטה להתחיל לפשוע. שנית, בהחלטות לבצע ולהתמקצע בביצוע פשעים כאלה או אחרים, במסגרת קריירת-הפשע בכלל, ובמסגרת מצבים קונקרטיים - "הזדמנויות", בפרט. לבסוף, נדון בתיאוריות חדשות שמתייחסות להחלטה של פושעים לחדול, ולתהליך החברתי במסגרתו פורשים יחדים מחיי הפשע. בנוסף, נתייחס בהרחבה בכל שלב ושלב, להשפעה שיש לענישה והרתעה על החלטות אלו.
נלמד, כי אסכולות קרימינולוגיות מסורתיות הדגישו כי ההחלטה לפשוע נתונה בידי יחידים באשר הם. לעומת זאת, תיאוריות קרימינולוגיות "סביבתיות" מאוחרות יותר - גורסות כי דווקא תנאי החיים והסביבה של פושעים - למשל, הזדמנויות, חברותא, או סגנון חיים - הם הגורמים שבסיכומו של דבר ממסללים יחידים לפשע, ו"מחליטים" עבורם.
נחתום את הקורס בהצגה של גישה מיקרו-התנהגותית חדשנית שמאתרת תסריטים-התנהגותיים באמצעות ניתוח קטעי וידיאו של אלימות. מניתוחים מצביים אלו עולה, כי דווקא רגשות, ודינמיקה גופנית ולא תהליכים קוגניטיביים - הם הגורמים שיקבעו למעשה, אילו מבין אינספור סיטואציות יומיומיות של קונפליקט חברתי, "יתלקחו" ויהפכו לסיטואציות של אלימות קשה.
