Course/Module description:
In this course we will explore the theory and practice of program evaluation research with an emphasis on its practical relevance for nonprofit practitioners. Readings, assignments and interactive class sessions focus on: monitoring and evaluation (M&E) for projects; criteria for developing a good fit for M&E in cross-cultural contexts; design principles for developing evaluation designs and selecting data collection strategies; and the political and ethical dimensions of M&E, especially in terms of international development initiatives. Students will become familiar with the use of participatory processes in every stage of an evaluation implementation, from the design through the reporting phases.

Course/Module aims:

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Develop evaluation thinking and participatory evaluation approaches that can fit into organizational learning processes;
• Critically assess the soundness of evaluation designs, data collection strategies and findings;
• Understand the importance of effective engagement of stakeholders throughout the strategic planning and evaluation processes.

Week 1- March 14th
Overview of M&E, along with class introductions and review of syllabus.
What is strategy? Linking strategy and program design

Week 2- March 21st
Articulating desired outcomes (of the programs/interventions)

Group Activity: Break-out groups on how to conceptualize what ‘success’ looks like. Sample TOC of glocal and case study.

Week 3- March 28th
Collaborative efforts in building a TOC
How can social initiatives continually nurture community building and bring participatory approaches to the work through M&E? Facilitating a TOC case study
Theory of change assignment due Week 4 .

Week 4- April 4th
Understanding the components of evaluation design
How do nonprofits promote a culture of inquiry and enhance organizational learning?

Week 5- April 11th
Determining key evaluation questions. Discussion of the link of TOC and what most want to learn with case study
Assignment - initial evaluation design due class 7

Week 6- April 25th
Selecting appropriate methodologies
Review menu of data collection and have them match with case study

Week 7 -May 2nd
in class exercise of critique

Week 8- May 9th
Navigating organizational dynamics (ethics, politics)
Group Activity: exploring participatory approaches to help navigate

Real life scenarios of conducting evaluation
