Course/Module description:
Is the cinema a political actor or not? Some say that the political power of the
cinema is embedded in its ability to entertain the people and thus to distance them
from any political action ("escapism"). In that sense, the cinema is regarded as a
kind of "opium for the masses" that sustains the present as is. Others argue that the
cinema, by appealing to people's feelings, actually mobilize them and encourage
political action. This course will be exploring the political role of the cinema by
focusing on different genres and attitudes to the said themes and to others.

Course/Module aims:
The goal of the course is to provide the students with good analytical tools for making political analysis of the cinema.
