Course/Module description:
It seems probable that in 2018 both, a party left from Social Democracy and also a party right from the conservative parties in Germany will be represented in the German Bundestag. Against this background this course will deal with the history and the present of left and right wing radicalism in the German party system and its perception of Israel, Islam and Antisemitism.
Course/Module aims:
Parties like the AfD and the LINKE, but also other right and left parties and organizations shall be analyzed as to their programs and specific policies. Thereby, we will particularly focus on whether there are commonalities between parts of the radical right and left, which go beyond a concept of totalitarianism that levels all differentiation. The increasing success of parties like AfD and LINKE shall be discussed specifically with regard to its implications for the present and future party system in Germany and the future relationship between Germany and Israel.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• orient themselves within the German political party system and assess the role of left and right wing radicalism
• compare right and left wing ideology in the context of the German society
• evaluate political statements and its impact on the political discourse in German society
• gain insights into the debate on Israel, Islam, Antisemitism and Racism in the radical Right and Left in Germany
