Course/Module description:
The course examines core issues in gender studies: gender and identity; gender and sexuality; gender, reading and writing; 'feminine' aesthetics; motherhood, fatherhood and the division of labor within the family; gender, nationalism and ethnicity; masculinities.
We will survey the different concepts, attitudes and points of controversy about these issues, as they transform and develop from formative feminist texts to contemporary ones. The discussion will place the texts in a historical and philosophical context, indicating shared assumptions and points of conflict in their positions. We will consider their contributions to the analysis of contemporary cultural practices, discourses and artworks, and assess the advantages and disadvantages of the use of these concepts in Israeli contexts.
The course will emphasize the personal and social sense of urgency fueling interest in the issues under discussion, and the existential ramifications of this interest for the course's participants.

Course/Module aims:
Exploring and analyzing core issues in gender studies (gender and identity; gender and sexuality; gender, reading and writing; 'feminine' aesthetics; motherhood, fatherhood and the division of labor within the family; gender, nationalism and ethnicity; masculinities).
Exploring and surveying different concepts, attitudes and points of controversy about these issues.
Re-thinking formative feminist texts that opened the critical discourse about gender issues, and assessing their contribution the contemporary analysis of gender issues.
Placing the texts in a historical and philosophical background, indicating shared assumptions and points of conflict in their positions.
Assessing the advantages and disadvantages of the use of these concepts in Israeli contexts.
Acknowledging the interrelations of the personal and the political implications of the issues under discussion, and their existential ramifications for the course's participants.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Discern, compare and evaluate major positions regarding controversial issues in the field of gender studies.
Critically and comparatively analyze attitudes and points of controversy about gender issues in various disciplines and cultural manifestations
Discern and appreciate the developmental and dialectical interrelations between pioneer feminist thinkers, practices and concepts and contemporary gender studies.
Discern and analyze both oppressive and undermining attitudes in various gender issues.
Apply critical concepts and methods to the analysis of various issues of gender that were not explored directly in the course.
Apply critical concepts and methods to the analysis of various cultural manifestations that construct gendered attitudes.
