Course/Module description:
This course gives a basic overview of the most important historical and contemporary factors for understanding North Korea. We cover North Korea’s development from its founding in 1948 until Kim Jong Un’s rule today, and its politics, economy, society and foreign policy. We will also talk about how we know what we know about the country. The overall goal is to make North Korea seem less mysterious, and to better understand the country.

Course/Module aims:
1. To obtain knowledge of how North Korea came into existence.
2. To understand North Korea’s political, economic, and social development from 1948 to the present.
3. To critically assess North Korea’s international relations.
4. To understand how the juche (self-reliance) ideology emerged and developed, and how it has affected people’s lives in North Korea.
5. To understand the North Korean famine and nuclear crisis.


Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Understanding the establishment of North Korea
2. Understanding key issues related to North Korea's international relationship
3. Understanding social, economic, and cultural development of North Korea
4. Understanding issues related to human rights issues

A grade of at least 70 is required for students for whom this course is a compulsory course in the Asian Studies Department.
