Course/Module description:
In the course of the semester we will engage in close readings of a number of canonical Conrad novels from Heart of Darkness to Under Western Eyes. The aim is to familiarize students with Conrad's unique idiom, to identify his stylistic innovations and to comment on their contribution to the formation of Modernist narrative.

Students should
-Learn the historical, cultural and literary principles associated with Modernism and Modernity and the differences between them.
- familiarize themselves with key thematic and stylistic concerns in the works of Joseph Conrad
- familiarize themselves with key critical approaches to Conrad´s works
- be able to employ narratological concepts in the discussion of narrative
- learn of the contribution of fin de siècle writing to high modernism
- learn to incorporate structural and post-structural approaches to fiction.
- offer and support credible, original and informed interpretations of the assigned texts
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Students will be able to conduct an informed analysis of his works and create an intelligent comparative analysis of two or more works. Students will learn to identify the principle of modernism evident in the texts and beyond and will learn to decipher Conrad´s unique idiom and its elusive ironies.
