Course/Module description:
Reading of different spells against the demoness Lamashtu, from the 2nd mill. incantations (Old Babylonian and Old Assyrian), up to the canonical series from the 1st mill.
Pictorial aspects of Lamashtu will be also discussed.

Course/Module aims:
Getting to know an important sub-corpus in Mesopotamian magic.
Analysing the way magical knowledge is transmitted from earlier period to later times.
Emphasising the relation between texts and material culture in the magic of the Ancient Near East

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To translate and analyse in detail different Akkadian incantations, with the help of dictionaries and other philological tools.
