Course/Module description:
In this course we will read two versions of one of India's formative narratives, Shiva and the Hunter. The first comes from the Mahabharata epic, and the second from the refined version in Bharavi’s classical poem.
Course/Module aims:
The course has two main goals. First, to impart the students with a quick and smooth technique of reading Sanskrit. Second, to familiarize the students with the genres of the epic, kāvya, and, finally, to enjoy the story of Arjuna’s exploits.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To read smoothly and quickly a Sanskrit text of medium difficulty, to become familiar with the genres of epic literature and kāvya (and realize their differences), and (in the case of kāvya), learn how to make use of the commentary.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction:
Reading, rereading, and reading again and again. This requires preparation at home on a daily basis and active participating in class.
