Course/Module description:
Ravana is madly in love at first glance with Sita. He fails to win her hand, though, because he is unable (or unwilling) to lift and thereby break Shiva's bow at her groom-choice ceremony. After further adventures he returns home, to his palace in in Lanka, where a play is staged in front of him, narrating the story of his own failed romantic attempt. The third act of Rajashekhara's "Young Ramayana," the unusual text which we will read in class, is a study of Ravana's reactions to this play-within-a-play.

Course/Module aims:
The course has two main goals. First, to impart the students with a quick and smooth technique of reading Sanskrit. Second, to familiarize the students with the genre of Sanskrit stage plays and, finally, to enjoy Rajashekhara's masterpiece.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To read smoothly and quickly a Sanskrit text of medium difficulty, to become familiar with the genres of Stage-plays and kāvya (and realize their differences), and to learn how to make good use of the commentary.
