Course/Module description:
Focus on current political, social, and cultural issues, using newspapers, journals, TV, radio broadcasts, and Web sources from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Emphasis on speaking, writing, and reading skills for professional contexts. Activities include: oral presentations and group discussions.

Course/Module aims:
The aim of this course is to familiarize students with various aspects of German society, its politics, history, and culture. The course will focus upon in-class discussions of readings, and student presentations.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- familiarize with various aspects of German society, its politics, history, and culture
- read, discuss and reflect various material centered around current topics of Germany
-talk and discuss freely at an ýadvanced level
- give short presentations in German about a specific topic regarding the course material ý

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: The teaching combines theoretical and practical approaches.

Course/Module Content:
We will read a collection of articles, a variety of supplementary texts, watch the news and movies and listen to podcasts that serve as a basis for class discussion. These will also be the starting points for written and oral work. Students contribute to different tasks:
Discussion, reading, listening, and presentation.
All readings, discussion, and written work for the course will be in German.

Throughout the course students should hear, watch and read daily news from Germany, Switzerland and Austria
Also, since this class focuses on advanced conversation, students are strongly encouraged to regularly
attend the German Conversation Group offered by the German Department. (Time and location can be requested inside the course or via E-Mail.)
