Course/Module description:
Both Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan are members of the most important group of German-speaking writers after 1945. They met for the first time in Vienna in May 1948 - Bachmann, born into a Austrian Nazi family, Celan, whose parents were murdered in the holocaust. A poetic dialogue emerged from their relationship which was reflected in the texts of both authors by references to certain motives, locations and quotations. But how exactly was this accomplished? How are we to understand the dialogue between these two authors in the aftermath of National Socialism? Relentless effort to take refuge in formulation – how are we to interpret this nowadays? This course focuses on Bachmann’s Frankfurt Lectures on Poetics (1959-1960), which are also available in a Hebrew translation, as well as on Celan’s Bremer Rede (1958) and his Meridian-Rede (1960).

The course intends to introduce students to the work of Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Interpret primary texts and critically evaluate arguments in secondary texts
Be familiar with certain poetological concepts and poetic forms
Reflect on methodological problems in analyzing literary texts
Discuss different concepts of memory
Reflect critically on aspects of literary history post 1945 in Germany

The course focuses on Ingeborg Bachmann’s Frankfurt Lectures on Poetics (1959/1960), also available in a Hebrew translation, on Paul Celan’s Bremer Rede (1958) and his Meridian-Rede (1960).
