Course/Module description:
In this course we shall discuss aspects of the contact between Hebrew and the various Jewish languages (Judeo-Arabic, Yiddish, Ladino and others) in the diaspora Jewish communities. We will discuss the diglossia (or multiglossia) that characterized Jewish life, the manifestation of the contacts between the Jewish languages, Hebrew and the local non-Jewish languages, choice of language and register for different literary genres, the covert register in Jewish languages, and more.

Course/Module aims:
In depth understanding of the characteristics of Jewish languages and the reciprocal influence of between Hebrew and the Jewish languages.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lecture, reading texts, discussion, listening to recordings

Course/Module Content:
Diglossia (or multiglossia) of Hebrew and the Jewish languages (Judeo-Arabic, Yiddish, Ladino and others) in the diaspora; choice of language and register for different literary genres; reciprocal manifestation of the contacts between the Jewish languages, Hebrew and the local non-Jewish languages in phonology (consonants and vowels), morphology, syntax and the lexicon; manifestation of this contact in the spoken language vs. written texts; contact between Hebrew in the diaspora and the revival of Hebrew in Eretz Yisrael, and more.
